What is scaling?

Scaling is the term used to refer to the removal of tartar and plaque, along with other similarly negative influences that stick on or between your teeth. These can be destructive not only to your teeth, causing decay and halitosis, but also to your gums, causing inflammation, infection, and disease. Scaling is a great option for those who are dealing with gingivitis and moderate/severe gum disease.

Why do I need scaling?

Scaling and root planing both serve the same purpose, both as a treatment option and as a preventative measure as well. Getting rid of the oral bacteria that collects in the plaque on your teeth also gets rid of risks for debilitating periodontal diseases that can eventually lead to bone loss. This also protects your teeth because it eliminates pockets that collect bad bacteria that leads to bone and tooth loss over time. It makes it much easier to clean your teeth and to maintain that level of cleanliness over time as well. This option also eliminates the odor causing bacteria that lead to halitosis. Finally, it can highly benefit the appearance of your smile as well, as it makes your gums appear much healthier along with removing stains that may reside on the surface of your teeth.

What is the process for scaling?

The process is pretty simple when it comes to scaling your teeth. There are special tools and instruments developed that aid the process, from smaller simpler tools to ultrasonic scalers that clean your teeth with vibrations and water (eliminating the need for chemicals). After our dentist takes x-rays and visually inspects your teeth, he will decide if scaling is safe. If it is and your teeth are strong enough, he will then use these tools to remove the tartar and plaque from the surface of your teeth and crowns along with the pockets in your gum line where it may build up. A local anesthetic may be used if the pockets are deep or your gums are sensitive.
