What is an antibiotic treatment?

When it comes to gum disease, there is no happy ending if left untreated. You could suffer from something as simple as irritation and wind up in the end with missing teeth. It needs to be taken care of and must be done quickly and carefully. Fortunately, there are many methods of doing so. For example, there are scaling procedures, root planing options, curettage, and surgery. However, sometimes these treatments are simply not enough on their own. Antibiotic treatments (while they can be used independently) are often effectively used in conjunction with these treatments in order reduce the bacteria either around the treatment area or in general in your mouth.

Are there options?

Antibiotic treatments can come in lots of varieties, from oral forms to topical gels that can work directly in your gum pockets. When used with gum infections and some forms of periodontal disease, it has worked wonders. Oral antibiotics can be taken in pill form (less common), gel form, or strips. There are three types of pills, tetracycline antibiotics, macrolide antibiotics, and metronidazole. These all can be used independently, but can be used in conjunction as well. These are not as commonly prescribed because they affect the whole body, not just your mouth. Topical gels or strips are the best in that they bring the medication straight where they need to go, not affecting your whole body. They are very direct, and incredibly effective when you are either recovering from a procedure or just combating oral bacteria. Some of the most popular antibiotics include Atridox®, PerioChip®, Actisite®, Elyzol®, and Arestin®.

Benefits of Antibiotic Treatment

When an infection begins, it can accelerate rapidly and can cause many problems in a short span of time. They can develop whether you have had a procedure done or not, but when you have had a procedure done, you may be more susceptible to infection than otherwise. Antibiotics on their own can be wonderful when it comes to eliminating bad bacteria in your mouth and keeping your oral hygiene at a maximum. However, they can be even more important after a scaling, root planing, curettage, or other procedure as that can make your gums more sensitive to intruding bacteria. Warding off infection can keep your mouth healthy longer and reduce the risk of complications.
