Gum Disease Treatment

Periodontal Disease and your HeartWhen it comes to your gums, they need to be as strong and healthy as your teeth. Poor oral hygiene may cause decay, but periodontal disease can cause equally as damaging results. Fusion Dental Specialists knows this, and our mission is to provide flawless health treatments. The best way to handle gum disease or periodontal disease is to keep it from happening in the first place. However, if you already struggle with it, it is important that we take care of it as soon as possible, so please set up an appointment today.

How does gum disease start?

Periodontal disease is perhaps one of the most damaging diseases to wreak havoc in your mouth. Gum disease can take over due to poor dental hygiene, smoking, bad diet, stress, diabetes and other diseases, some medications, and even genetics. Most commonly we see people who take poor care of their mouth falling to the dangers of gum disease.

Can it be cured?

Periodontal disease in its earliest stages can be taken care of or cured entirely. Many times, if caught in time, gum disease can be reversed entirely through a deep cleaning performed in our office. If it has moved beyond the reach of a simple cleaning, then scaling or root planing may be better options. In these instances, tartar, plaque, and calculus are removed through specialized scaling tools or the smoothing of the roots of your teeth to prevent bacteria from latching on, respectively.

Removing the toxicities allows your body to get rid of any infections. As infection grows more severe, the options grow more limited and more difficult. Gum surgery may be necessary, where we can not only eliminate the problem zones but also take care of the tissue lost in the process. At its most advanced stages, periodontal disease leads to bone loss and bone grafting may be necessary. Your body does not naturally stop this from happening, so that is where we come in, recreating the lost bone and not only promoting healthy jaws but also stabilizing your teeth. As bone loss grows more severe, you risk losing teeth.

Gum Disease Is Not Independent

There have been significant links between gum disease, heart disease, diabetes, strokes, and more. Cancer and premature birth are also possibilities. The bacteria that hide within the crevices of your mouth and cause disease do not stay there. They are free to travel the rest of your body as well and can cause just as much damage to other organs as to your mouth alone. Maintaining your oral health also goes hand in hand with maintaining your overall health.

Fusion Dental Specialists are there to guide you every step of the way, from treating your gum disease to formulating the best oral hygiene routine for you as an individual to keep you on your A-game. Our experienced team can help prevent disease or restore your health if it is already declining. For a diagnosis or general examination, give us a call today!
