Types of Dentures

When you have missing teeth, one of the most turned to options are dentures. There are, though, a variety to choose from and finding the best fit can be challenging. To understand what you are getting into, here are some general options. For starters, there are two basic options, full and partial dentures. Both of these options are removable (except in circumstances where you use a permanent system such as All-on-4® Treatment Concept dentures), and both offer a substantial improvement when you are dealing with missing teeth or tissues.

When it comes to full dentures, there are two sub-categories. These include complete and immediate dentures. Complete dentures are more secure and more able to fit comfortably within your mouth. This comes from the fact that they are made after your teeth are removed and after the gums begin to heal. They are ready for use weeks after. Immediate dentures offer the benefit of timeliness as they are usable immediately after having your teeth removed. However, they can be uncomfortable as the gums change size and shape as they heal.

This often means that they can fit improperly or move uncomfortably. These are considered to be only a temporary solution between having the teeth removed and having complete dentures made. When it comes to patients who still have some natural teeth left that are undamaged, a partial denture may be the better option. A removable partial denture (or removable bridge) is a set of false teeth mounted on a base that matches your gums. These teeth are mounted onto metal clip like appliances that connect to your natural teeth.

This allows them to stay relatively comfortably and securely in your mouth. When one or more natural teeth are still in your jaw (upper or lower), this is the course of action taken. Both of these options can be eliminated when using a more permanent denture option which includes partial or full denture sets being mounted onto implants that are surgically secured in your jaw. These are often a better solution, but our staff will help you to find the best option for your individual needs.
