What is root planing?

Root planing is a treatment that we offer that can help you to get rid of potentially dangerous bacteria within your mouth. Root planing eliminates problems from your roots themselves, promoting healthier oral hygiene and preventing further bacterial damage as it helps to keep bacteria from sticking to the surface of the roots. Bacteria collection from pockets or bad cleaning habits can be incredibly detrimental. Bacterial buildup can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, bone loss, tooth loss, and the ever so annoying halitosis.

What does root planing do?

Similarly to scaling, root planing eliminates plaque, tartar, and calculus buildup from the surfaces in your mouth, but is more specific to the roots of your teeth than scaling is. Root planing is a great option to prevent the damaging periodontal diseases that can wreak havoc on your mouth. While it starts with limited symptoms, gum disease can lead to inflammation and irritation, blood and pain, bone and tooth loss, and can even cause other issues throughout your body, such as issues with heart disease, diabetes, and even strokes.

Root planing also eliminates the bacteria that causes halitosis. In protecting you against gum disease, it protects against the possibility of tooth loss, and also reduces your risk of decay and other bacterial related tooth problems. Finally, it can restore your smile naturally to a more radiant version of itself, getting rid of superficial stains and pockets in the gums.

How does it work?

When bacteria and plaque go below the gum line, they embed themselves onto the somewhat uneven surface of your tooth’s roots. Root planing smooths that surface and in doing so not only eliminates what buildup was there but leaves behind a smooth surface that bacteria finds more difficult to cling to. When the root is smooth, the gums are often then treated with antimicrobials to keep bacteria out and to promote healing.

If you have bacterial problems below the gum line, Fusion Dental Specialists can help you get right back on track and healthier than ever. We have years of experience giving our patients their deepest and most satisfying clean. You are sure to be satisfied with the care and respect you are provided with and also with the results of your deep cleaning.
