What is crown lengthening?

Crown lengthening can be used in an assortment of ways. For example, if you find that you have an abundance of gum tissue covering a larger surface of your teeth than normal, crown lengthening can remedy the situation by displaying a larger amount of your natural tooth’s surface, remedying your “gummy” smile. This involves reshaping the gum tissue that is visible and the bone beneath it. This process not only improves the health of your teeth and gums and cosmetically enhances your smile, but it is also used to shape your teeth to fit crowns comfortably and safely. It can be used on a single tooth or can be used throughout your entire mouth.

Why do I need crown lengthening?

There are several reasons that our patients may undergo crown lengthening. One of the most common reasons is simply the restoration of damage. Gum disease, decay, and trauma can ruin teeth. In some more severe cases, crown lengthening must be used to get your teeth ready for the crown placement needed to fix and support the tooth. A crown cannot be fitted properly over a severely damaged tooth, nor can it be fitted over the gums.

Even without a crown, deeply rooted decay and breaks cannot even be accessed to be repaired with excessive gum tissue blocking the way. Removing the excess gum tissue and reshaping the tooth is often a necessity. This same tissue that can disrupt repair can also make your smile quite unsightly. Your teeth tend to look very small when there is an abundance of gum tissue, and while it may not be as appealing as you would like your smile to be, it can also be a risk to your health as it increases your risk of gum disease. Removing gum and reshaping your gum line can restore your gum health along with bringing your smile back to a natural radiance.

What is the process like?

First, you are administered an anesthetic (generally a local one). Then, our dentist will remove any crowns that you may have at the time of the procedure. Do not worry; they will be replaced right away afterward. Then, our professional will make incisions throughout your mouth or the area surrounding the tooth you are having worked on so that he or she can separate the gums and the teeth. This gives them access to the bone and roots.

Then, the dentist will decide how much gum, bone, or tissue to remove to fit a crown. This is done with special instruments, and then when the dentist is finished, they will use other tools to clean the area and seal it. Aftercare instructions will be given at your appointment.

You are in the most capable hands here at Fusion Dental Specialists, and there is no need to worry about your upcoming procedure. We will take fantastic care of you. Give us a call today to set up your crown lengthening appointment.
